Jesse Davis explains many of the JDBC development pitfalls he's come across in production environments.  Davis also recommends some best practices, such as paying attention to your metadata.  Don't get stuck with accidental architecture, Davis says, think about it beforehand.

Jesse Davis is a Director of Development at Progress Data Direct.  He is currently responsible  for the Connect and Shadow z/Direct product lines, as senior engineering manager.  Jesse has lead development efforts for a number of DataDirect Connect products, and has developed core modules for the Connect for ODBC and Connect for JDBC product groups.

"Architecture first" - how true!

Following modern movements like agile development, many forget about the importance to have a good software design/architecture. It's not modern to think before doing.
