Fuse OSS Leaves the Nest

This week Progress Software watched proudly as their FuseSource division declared its ability to stand on its own two feet.  The open source organization, which produces and supports Fuse ESB, Fuse Message Broker, Fuse Mediation Router, and Fuse Services Framework, is officially an independent owned subsidiary.  FuseSource and Progress say that this move was made because it would allow FuseSource to better serve open source customers.

FuseSource's business is distinct from the rest of Progress, the two companies say.  The lower price points are one of the main distinctions.  All of FuseSource's projects are based on Apache technologies and free to download.  In addition, FuseSource offers paid subscriptions that include installers, guides, tutorials, a management console, and access to project leads and consultants.

Here are some quick descriptions of FuseSource's open source products:

• Fuse ESB - Based on Apache ServiceMix, Fuse ESB is a fully productized enterprise service bus (ESB), the central "backbone" supporting enterprise integration efforts.
• Fuse Message Broker - Based on Apache ActiveMQ, Fuse Message Broker is an open source Java Message Service (JMS) Message Broker, which enables applications and service components to communicate with each other.
• Fuse Mediation Router - Based on Apache Camel, the Fuse Mediation Router is an engine that enables enterprises to quickly implement enterprise integration patterns.
• Fuse Services Framework - Based on Apache CXF, the Fuse Services Framework is a platform that enables rapid development and deployment of Web services, which enable applications to share specific functionality and information with each other.

Another announcement this week was the creation of Fuse Forge, a portal for developers to collaborate on integration projects.  They provide the development infrastructure so that coders can focus on building the apps.  After being available for a short period of time, there's already more than 50 projects on the site.

The subsidiary's new site, fusesource.com, features a ton of resources including videos showing how to get started with Fuse ESB 4 and how to deploy a POJO in Fuse ESB 4.
