DZone Daily Dose - 2009/12/11

At Washington University, they have a class that teaches students how to write iPhone apps.  Each student got an iPod touch at the beginning of the semester and designed apps in teams.  The apps created by students could track items in a fridge, teach you how to count cards in Blackjack, and collate photos from Flickr.  All of the apps provided original functionality that wasn't already available in the App Store.  Hopefully this won't give kids the impression that they can easily get rich off iPhone development.

Oracle says it had a good first day at the EU hearing.  Tomorrow, Microsoft and SAP (the allies against Oracle) will take their shots at the proposed Sun acquisiton.  Microsoft might want some payback from when Oracle and Sun pushed the US Justice Dept. to bring an antitrust suit against them.  On the EU side, commission chair Neelie Kroes says she is still optimistic that the EU can resolve its issues with Oracle.

Continuing the series of weird animal nicknames, Canonical is releasing the Alpha 1 version of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Long Term Support), named "Lucid Lynx".  This cool cat includes updated packages and throws out other packages, such as the HAL package.  This makes the software boot and resume faster.  The Kubuntu release includes KDE Software Compilation 4.4 (beta 1), which is codenamed "Kompilation".  You can download the desktop version here.

More leaks sprang out of Apple today (do they do this on purpose?).  This time, its about the next generation iPhone.  A Russian mobile news site reported that Foxconn, an iPhone manufacturer, received an order for the next generation of iPhones.  This could mean an early release for the iPhone 4, but the report could very well be false.

The top link in the past 24 hours is Google's blog post "Introducing GWT 2.0".  It has videos and outlines of the new features in Google Web Toolkit 2.0.

P.S. Unless you were under a living under a rock yesterday, you've probably heard that Sun released GA versions of NetBeans 6.8 and GlassFish v3.  GlassFish v3 is the first application server to support Java EE 6.
