Today is the 5 year anniversary of Firefox 1.0.  Thousands of add-ons have been contributed over the years because Firefox's XUL based architecture makes it easy for developers to write extensions.  Firefox's 3.5 version is now the second most popular web browser behind Internet Explorer.  Firefox 3.6 is due to for release very soon.

SourceForge officially changed its name to "Geeknet" as part of the company's transformation process.  Scott L. Kauffman, President and CEO of Geeknet, says the company changed its name in order to "clearly define the audience we serve."  Looks like Geeknet isn't mincing words with their new re-branding campaign.  They're standing tall and proclaiming: "We are geeks!"

VMWare is releasing its View 4 desktop virtualization software next week.  View 4 aims to gain wider adoption than most desktop virtualization programs, which end up being used by a small group of industries.  VMWare says their uSphere platform can manage and provision thousands of desktops on-demand.

Silverlight is coming to Facebook according to an announcement by Microsoft.  The Microsoft SDK for the Facebook platform will support development of Silverlight, WPF, ASP.NET, ASP.NET MVC, and Windows Forms applications.  Microsoft has been working on this platform since the Facebook API was opened in April.  Look out Flash.
