Apache Celebrates 10 Years

In just ten years, the Apache Software Foundation (ASF) has become a prominent beacon of open source development.  At the ApacheCon 2009 conference this week, Apache is celebrating ten years of operation with 65 projects under its wing, 33 projects in the Apache Incubator, and over two dozen codebases in the Apache Labs.  The official anniversary date was in March during a convention in Europe.  Apache is also holding celebrations this week at its yearly U.S. conference.

A lot of ASF's growth has come in the last four years--the number of projects has more than doubled in that time.  The foundation began with just 21 members and the Apache HTTP Server, which is still the most popular group of web servers in use.  Today, Apache's all-volunteer community of over 300 members includes some of the most respected members of the open source community.

ApacheCon made another major announcement at ApacheCon.  The Subversion project, which is sponsored by Collabnet, has been submitted to the Apache Incubator and is now in the process of becoming a top level Apache project.  Subversion is a version control and configuration management tool that already uses Apache projects including Apache Portable Runtime and HTTP Web Server.  Subversion has modeled itself on many ASF principles.  The Subversion project is a "natural fit" for Apache according to Justin Erenkrantz, President of the ASF.
