Daily Dose - Amazon Brings GPU Instances to Cloud Infrastructure Services

Amazon's eleventh EC2 instance type was unveiled this week, and it's quite similar to their Cluster Compute Instance.  However, this instance harnesses the high-level computing power of the GPU.  The new Cluster GPU instances should provide the high performance double precision floating point and ECC memory technology that some high level application development demands.  One AWS account can use up to 8 Cluster GPU instances by default.

Cassandra 0.6.8 Fixes Regression Bug
Cassandra 0.6.8 was rushed to a release in order to fix a regression bug from Cassandra 0.6.7.  Other than that, there weren't many changes outside of a more efficient read/repair.  The last release updated GC settings and added quorum read optimizations.  

AIR for Gingerbread Released Ahead of Android 2.3 Debut
Adobe released version 2.5.1 of their AIR runtime this week to prepare for the upcoming Android 2.3 release.  Developers who have built an apps in Flex should update them to support AIR 2.5.1 so that these apps can run on upcoming versions of Android.  To do this, you simply modify the minimum patch level field in your application descriptor file (application.xml) to "17730".

Linux Mint 10
Codenamed "Julia," Linux Mint version 10 has been released this week with plenty of updates and improvements.  Linux Mint 10 is based on Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" and features version 2.6.3 of the Linux kernel.  Improvements have been made to the upload manager and software manager.  New themes and looks have been added as well.
