Geronimo Gets JPA 2.0
Apache Geronimo 2.1.3, 2.1.4, 2.1.5-SNAPSHOT, 2.2 and 2.2.1-SNAPSHOT servers are now able to get upgrades from JEE 5's JPA 1.0 to JEE 6's JPA 2.0.  This can be done without upgrading to the full JEE 6 server.  The JPA 2.0 is available through a set of plugins using the Apache OpenJPA 2.0.0 beta.  Installation instructions can be found here.

Microsoft Taking Office Apps to the Web, Expects Big Payoff
Microsoft projects that it will make at least $1 billion dollars from selling upcoming web versions of its Office apps in the next three to five years.  The company believes that this move will help it compete with Google Docs and Gmail.  They expect half of their email and collaboration software customers to switch to the cloud-run apps in the next three to five years.

Where TraceMonkey Fails, JägerMonkey Kicks Butt
TraceMonkey is Mozilla's JavaScript optimization engine for Firefox 3.5 and higher.  It speeds up web browsing by monitoring loops and converting them into streamlined assemblies, but unfortunately this method of "tracing" doesn't always work, and when it doesn't, JavaScript runs about as fast as it would have in 2007-2008.  Mozilla has unveiled its solution to this problem in a new inline threading for SpiderMonkey called JaegerMonkey (or JägerMonkey).  This solution will allow a better baseline performance when tracing is not possible.

WebOS Gets Video Updates
Palm just sent an over-the-air update to Pre Plus and Pixi Plus owners for the next version of webOS.  WebOS 1.4 featues video editing, recording, and Flash 10 capability.  Videos can be quickly uploaded to YouTube as well.  Calendar, Messaging, and Email apps have gained productivity enhancements.  There are several new notification features and customizations too.
