Daily Dose - Firefox: Europe's New #1 Browser

Less than a year after Microsoft was forced to provide that "browser ballot" on setup (for Europe only), their browser (Internet Explorer) has lost it's position as the top browser in Europe.  Firefox is the new leader of the continent, even though it didn't gain much marketshare—they have Google to thank for IE's fall.  It turns out that Chrome, not Firefox, has been stealing marketshare from IE.

1,000 Core Chip a Reality
It was only a month or two ago that Intel was talking about the feasibility of a 1,000 core chip architecture.  Well today Glasgow University researches have introduced a proof of concept that uses FPGA chips with 1k cores running an MPEG algorithm at 5Gbps.  You can read more about this very early proof-of-concept here.

OpenStack to Help Wikipedia onto the Cloud
The Wikimedia foundation is currently using the open source cloud technology from OpenStack to build a cloud infrastructure for testing and development.  OpenStack is mainly composed of two open source cloud technologies from Rackspace and NASA.  The engineers at Wikimedia want to remove the management of user accounts, virtual machines, IP addresses, and DNS entries from the operations sphere.  Currently they are using OpenStack virtualization, PowerDNS, and Puppet to do this.

Android Honeycomb: For Dual Core Only?
Bobby Cha, an executive for the Korean electronics company Enspert, says that Android 2.4/3.0 will only work on dual-core processors.  The devices must also have 1280x720 screens, he says.  While we can't confirm what he says is true, we do know for sure that Honeycomb is going to be an OS optimized for tablets.
