For many people, the internet of things is just about pointless time-savers around the house. You know, a disembodied voice that makes you smoothies, or something:

But according to Robin's blog, there's a lot more to it than that. At least 25 more things, to be precise, that the IoT can do outside of home automation. These alternatives are divided into a few broad categories:

  • Retail
  • Transportation
  • Healthcare
  • Offices
  • Government and Urban Development
  • Fitness
  • Agriculture

And each of these categories holds a few ideas. For example, automated highway tolls and smart traffic management do a lot to simplify life on the road, and data-driven use of pesticides and irrigation in agriculture have huge impacts on environmental and financial health. In other words, the IoT has a lot of practical applications, and the potential for growth is massive.

Check out the full list at Robin's blog, and leave us a comment if you can think of any practical applications not covered there.
