Google Not Guilty in Case of Patent Infringement

The jury has returned it's verdict that Google have not infringed upon Oracle's patents, in what Judge Alsup has described as "the longest civil trial" he's ever been in.  So while the jury has been dismissed, the judge still needs to rule on whether APIs can be copyrighted.

Oracle's statement following the verdict: 

Oracle presented overwhelming evidence at trial that Google knew it would fragment and damage Java. We plan to continue to defend and uphold Java's core write once run anywhere principle and ensure it is protected for the nine million Java developers and the community that depend on Java compatibility.

And Google's: 

 Today's jury verdict that Android does not infringe Oracle's patents was a victory not just for Google but the entire Android ecosystem.

The agreement that both companies came up with last week means that Oracle will receive statutory damages for Google's use of rangeCheck and test files, at $15,000 per count at the most if it's ruled that APIs don't fall under copyright law. If it's found that they do, then it's back to the courtroom. Hopefully it won't come to that. 

So it's a good day for Google,  and Oracle's seem to be having a pretty bad time in the courtroom.
