DZone's Different!

Hello DZoners!

My name is Austin Kowitz and I’m a graphic designer at DZone. And you can mostly blame (praise?) me and DZone developer, Ross Jernigan, for what you see currently at DZone. We still have tons of ideas we haven't implemented yet -- but we're doing the agile thing, releasing early, releasing often. So we'd love hear your feedback, whatever it may be. I’m bracing myself for the whirlwind of..criticism? excitement? We await your response with bated breath. :]

So let’s go over some of the changes and the reasons we made them.

First, in general, we wanted to make the site much more legible and feel less cluttered. So we increased text size for important elements, while giving every element a bit more elbow room.

You’ll especially notice the larger article headlines on the Zone homepages. The goal here?  Letting you scan the whole Zone feed more quickly, making it easier to find stories particularly interesting to you.

Also on the Zone homepages, check out our new thumbnails! Now every article will boast a visually interesting counterpart -- which I'm definitely excited about. But we're hoping the thumbnails will also help you all find cool content.

The new masthead at the top of the site is definitely a significant change. This brings the best stories from all the Zones to the top of every page. The masthead is expertly curated by our excellent editorial team — guaranteed awesome, fresh every day.

The trending topics bar, just below the masthead, gives you a quick feel for the pulse of software development today. Please do send us any and all feedback on the masthead in particular — we’d love to make it as useful as possible.

So yeah, please let us know what you think. We're really excited about the redesign, and look forward to hearing your feedback. Enjoy the new look, and help us make DZone better for you!

Thanks!

In agrrement with many of the comments here: thumbnails and titles are too big, more scrolling is required, features have been removed (annoucements, popular links). I call that a fail. I much prefer the "old" version of the web site.

Thanks guys for all the comments! very helpful indeed. We're going to work on geting more content above the fold and try to fix these outrageous proportions. Any other feedback would be great, like if you've noticed the new footer and found it useful, or if the header has been useful at all... thanks!

I like seeing the photo of the author of the article. That feature is gone now. The large thumb nails with a random image doesn't add anything useful and only takes up space.

The new look is awkward.

1.That's the look for an online newspaper. For newspaper there is the need for a large image left to the post. For javalobby it just takes alot of space for nothing.

2. Fonts are huge. Titles are for nearsighted.

3. First openning  -> felt like someone shot my eyes. For 1600x900 resolution I can see only one article without scrolling. That's a huge drawback.

4. No user's picture.

5. Too little space for the article's information.

6. No announcements. There is an empty rectangle on bottom right.

7. Time to load an article is bigger.

 Older version was alot better.

The Announcements are back, as well as the list of popular articles. The only thing I'm missing are the photos of the authors of articles -- that's something that made DZone really friendly. For the rest of the changes, great job.

Indeed I see that popular articles and announcements are back. Thank you DZone folks for listening to your community and for taking action. This is very much appreciated.

I also think the fonts and icons are huge... not confortable to see.

I liked having the picture of the user; useful to see at a glance who is saying what.

Comments section looks far better than articles section. I think JavaLobby should be consequent when choose fonts and layout.

I also noticed that "Zone Leaders" area changes: people appear there and in one-two days they are gone. Are they removed ? Sometimes ago I also saw a person two times in "Feature MVBs".

I would love to see smaller images and the text from preview to be written also under the image , not aligned right to the image.

It will fix the locked scrolling issue. We will eventually update it fully to the new design. We're definitely trying to release early and often these days. Let's see if it pans out.-Dr. Marla Ahlgrimm

This is a complex task and the corresponding code is necessarily somewhat complex, otherwise it would just be built-in magic.-Donald Leon Farrow
